"spiritual" and "religious"

someone said:“More young people today are defining themselves as ‘spiritual’ but not ‘religious’.”

my thought:I don’t know if this is a good or a bad thing, because I think there are at least two very different groups that tend to describe themselves as “spiritual but not religious”.

On the one hand: People who have done a great deal of deep thinking and soul-searching, researching a large number of religions and determining which aspect of each they feel a connection with.

On the other hand: People who are lazy and uninformed, have never seriously thought about spirituality in their lives, who say they believe in God because they kinda-sorta feel like they should say that but really just don’t know or care.

What I would find interesting would be to find out how many of these unaffiliated people who believe in an afterlife and in God actually KNOW THINGS about various religions in the world.
